He Called Me A Stone And Chose Her Pearl Chapter 02
Nolan was the Alpha heir of the Northcrest Pack. His father ruled a vast territory in the north with nearly two thousand pack members, and Nolan himself was a decorated graduate of the Royal Academy, excelling in both academic and combat training.
Countless people were desperate for an alliance with him.
My father, Arthur Jennings, was just the deputy director of the Royal Archives. We were an ordinary family from the Greenvale Pack, with no land to our name and no real power.
Naturally, my parents were overjoyed that Vanessa had secured such a match.
After the guests left, they called both of us into the study.
The first thing my father said was, “Laurel Jennings, give me your phone.”
I looked up at him.
“You’ve been corresponding with a man in secret for almost a year, hiding it from your own family. Do you have any idea what kind of trouble you could have caused?”
My heart hammered against my ribs.
I had never told anyone. How could they possibly know?
My mother, Diana, sighed.
“Nolan told your father that he and Vanessa met through an annotation notebook at the library. They’d been communicating under aliases for nearly a year and only recently learned each other’s identities.”
“But everyone knows Vanessa hates to read. The only reason she ever goes to Aster Library is for the boutique on the ground floor. It doesn’t take a genius to figure out you wrote those notes.”
Vanessa immediately threw herself into our mother’s arms.
“I’m not uncultured,” she cried. “I just don’t bury my nose in a book all day like Laurel, acting like she’s better than everyone.”
She shot me a triumphant smile. “But I do have my sister to thank. If I hadn’t followed her to the library that day, I never would have met Nolan.”
I ignored her, my gaze fixed on my parents. “If you knew the truth, why didn’t you say anything?”
My father’s face darkened.
“The Northcrest Pack has already accepted Vanessa as Nolan’s intended. Once the Pack Council gives its final approval after the wedding, she’ll be the sole candidate for their future Luna.”
“This marriage is vital for her future. You’re her older sister. Could you really live with yourself if you ruined this for her?”
“Besides, if it got out that both my daughters were chasing the Northcrest heir, our family would be a laughingstock. You did well to keep your mouth shut earlier. At least you showed some sense.”
So that was it.
They knew the truth.
They had just chosen Vanessa. Again.
