He Called Me A Stone And Chose Her Pearl Chapter 15
Nolan’s mother, Luna Cecilia Pierce, did not like Vanessa.
For one, she believed Vanessa knew nothing of Northcrest affairs and was completely incapable of shouldering the duties of a future Luna.
For another, she found Vanessa flighty and lacking in basic judgment.
Having been coddled by our parents her entire life, Vanessa couldn’t stand the criticism.
Luckily for her, Nolan was still infatuated. He defended her at every turn, even telling his mother that if he couldn’t marry Vanessa, he would refuse all other marriage arrangements.
But just a few days later, the two of them clashed again at a youth salon hosted by the Royal Academy.
Vanessa arrived dressed to the nines, earning praise for her beauty. But when the academic trivia began, she couldn’t answer the most basic literary questions and ended up humiliating herself again and again.
Nolan’s expression was grim the entire time. After driving her home, he left without even stepping inside.
Vanessa cried all night.
Mother cried with her, and somehow, the blame landed on me.
“Even when you were just twins in my womb, Laurel was always stronger. She took all the educational resources in this family. That’s why people look down on you now.”
I stood outside her door, feeling nothing but a profound numbness.
Apparently, if one person refuses to read, that, too, can be blamed on someone else.
