He Locked Me Out Now He’s Begging Me Back Chapter 14
On Monday, I took half a day off and went to the law office with screenshots of the lock permissions, the school district paperwork, and the account records.
After reviewing everything, the attorney slid a representation agreement across the desk.
“You did the right thing separating your paycheck, stopping nonessential payments, and removing yourself from the pickup list in writing. The next step is to seek an order protecting the property so the jointly owned house can’t be mortgaged or transferred.”
I signed my name and paid the retainer.
A coworker texted, asking if I was in some kind of trouble.
I replied: *Handling a few personal matters. I’ve already retained a professional.*
I had been back at the office for less than ten minutes that afternoon when Tessa called.
I didn’t answer.
She immediately followed up with a text saying Noah had gotten into a fight with a classmate and the teacher was demanding a parent come in right away. She was still at work, Daniel couldn’t leave, and could I please go.
I didn’t reply.
A few minutes later, more messages appeared.
“The school is closest to your office.”
“I’m still on probation. If I ask for time off, I could get fired.”
The last one was a voice message, her tone thick with tears. “Claire, please. Noah only wants to see you right now.”
