Everyone in the room was frozen.
“An infant’s liver has a strong regenerative capacity,” I continued.
“The doctors removed only a small portion for the transplant. The long-term impact on the child’s health was minimal.”
“I was the one who signed the surgical consent form.”
I turned and walked toward Zane.
“That was the only child my sister left behind.”
My voice finally wavered.
“But the person lying in that hospital bed was the man I had just married. I couldn’t just watch him die.”
I looked directly into Zane’s eyes.
“This child donated part of his liver to you. That operation saved your life.”
“The scar on your abdomen is still there. Do I need to remind you?”
All the color drained from Zane’s face. He stumbled back a step, bumping into a chair.
“Zane Marino, you can forget what happened,” I said, my voice turning cold.
“But you can’t erase that scar.”
“Do you want to tell everyone, right now, how you got it?”
“I… I didn’t…” His words came out in broken fragments, cold sweat beading on his forehead.
“Arlette, I didn’t think it would come to this. I really didn’t…”
“You only wanted to stand with your first love and call the child who saved your life an impostor?”
