The DNA Test That Backfired Chapter 08

His mouth opened, but his throat seemed to have closed up. He couldn’t get a single word out.

Camille grabbed his arm, her fingers digging into his flesh.

“Impossible,” she hissed, staring at Zane, her voice strained.

“Zane, she’s lying, isn’t she?”

“This document is fake, isn’t it?”

Zane avoided her gaze, turning his head away.

His silence was a clearer answer than any words.

But I wasn’t finished.

I had never wanted to bring what came next to light. They had forced my hand.

I took out the thickest stack of documents and laid them out one by one.

“These are the hospital admission records from three years ago. This is the compatibility report. This is the hospital ethics committee’s approval.”

No one at the table spoke.

“Three years ago, Zane suffered acute liver failure. His condition was critical.”

My voice was steady.

“The doctors said he needed an immediate living-donor liver transplant, or he wouldn’t survive more than a few days.”

“But his matching requirements were strict, and no suitable donor could be found on the organ registry.”

I paused.

“The one who ultimately matched was a one-year-old child.”

I raised my hand and pointed toward the stairs.

“I don’t think I need to explain who that child was.”

The teacup in Camille’s hand slipped from her fingers and shattered on the floor.
