Reborn To Reject My Regretful Mate For The King Chapter 12

The man calling himself Gale had never really tried to hide his identity.

The tiara comb from his mother, the royal signet ring on his right thumb, the fealty of the Royal Guards, and those eyes that never wavered when making life-or-death decisions—it all pointed to one person.

He was thinner than he appeared in the royal news reports. The scruffy beard and fresh injuries from the night of the coup had changed the lines of his face, so I hadn’t recognized him at first.

He was Gavin Mercer, the rightful Alpha King of Valedon.

He knew exactly how much power he still commanded, and he was fully prepared to drag Magnus down with him into ruin.

After spending more time with him, I learned two more things.

First, he wasn’t afraid of pain.

On several rain-soaked nights, when the agony from the silver in his bones was so intense it seemed to reach the marrow, he nearly cut into his own knees to dig the fragments out himself.

Second, he was afraid of the dark.

Every night, he turned on every light in the bedroom, the hallway, and the medical room, and double-checked the backup generator.

To monitor his injuries, I began sleeping on a cot just outside his bedroom.

As long as he was awake, he would call out to make sure I was still there.

One night, the sheer brightness made it impossible for me to sleep.

I got up to switch off the main bedroom lamp, and while I was at it, I turned off the hall lights, too.

The instant the room plunged into darkness, Gavin lunged at me from the bed.
