His breathing grew ragged with emotion.
“Eve, you can’t do this… You promised me…”
“Promised you what?”
“You said you’d come to Switzerland!”
“Did I ever say that?”
He froze.
“Did you ever ask me?”
“Did you ever ask if I was willing to go to Switzerland? Willing to give up the Nexagen opportunity?”
“Did you ever ask if I wanted to leave California and go to a foreign country just to make apple pie for you and Clara?”
His mouth opened wide. It wouldn’t close.
He had never asked.
But he had assumed.
Assumed that I would follow his lead in everything.
After a long moment, he finally spoke.
“If you didn’t want to, why didn’t you say so?”
I let out a cold laugh.
“Why should I have to say anything? When you pulled our joint application, did you say anything to me?”
“If I had told you, would you have let me stay?”
Adrian fell silent.
It was as if he was still digesting this reality.
A long while later, he spoke again.
“So how long do you plan to stay there?”
“Forever.”
He became frantic again.
“Evelyn, so we’re just going to be long-distance now? We’re married!”
“Married?”
I let out a bitter laugh.
“Adrian, you forgot why we started. But I didn’t.”
“From now on, we walk our own paths. We have nothing to do with each other anymore.”
