He Signed My Freedom Now He Wants Me Back Chapter 05

They forced an entire bottle of bitter liquid down my throat.

It scorched my esophagus like countless needles piercing my blood. My body temperature plummeted. My canines ached, and a deep agony shot through my bones as a shift was violently shoved back down.

Ember gave one shrill warning before the poison crushed her into silence.

I clawed at my throat, struggling to breathe. Before my vision blurred, I saw Lucian, standing perfectly still, making no move to stop it.

The children had stopped crying.

They were clapping.

“Serves her right.”

When I woke again, I was in an isolation room. A Healer told me my healing had been blocked for four hours. If the dose had been any stronger, Ember might have permanently lost the ability to shift.

The Healer on duty handed me the injury record. Under inter-pack medical law, forcing a werewolf to ingest concentrated wolfsbane was classified as serious bodily harm. If ordered directly by an Alpha, the Registry was required to preserve the record permanently.

“You can request an independent investigation,” she said in a low voice. “Even as his Luna.”

In my last life, I would have refused. I would have worried an investigation would damage Lucian’s authority, that Noah and Iris would be marked for falsely accusing their mother. In the end, I would have explained all that pain away as a family misunderstanding.
