“We’re here.”
He got out and came around to open my door.
The yard was perfectly still.
“It’s just me now. I couldn’t give you the celebration you deserve. I’m sorry.”
I shook my head. “It’s fine. Car, house, and both parents deceased. Could be worse.”
I paused, pressing my lips together. “Sorry. That came out wrong.”
He laughed softly. “No need to apologize. It’s the truth.”
He held his palm open in front of me. I placed my hand in his.
I followed him through the yard, past the garden, and into the main room.
Everything was clean and bright. On the wooden table, a fresh pot of tea still trailed steam.
“According to tribal custom,” he said, releasing my hand and gesturing to the clearing beyond the yard, “we light candles under the big tree at dusk, hold hands, and walk one circle around it. That completes the binding ceremony.”
“It’s still early. Rest for a while. I’ll go tidy up outside.”
He turned and walked out.
I stood in the middle of the room and looked around.
The furnishings were simple, but everything showed care.
A vase on the windowsill held a few stems of roses. Books were stacked neatly on the corner of the desk.
For a dragon beastkin living alone to keep a home like this, he either genuinely loved life, or he’d long since grown used to having no one around.
I drifted over to the cabinet. A photo frame caught my eye.
The picture inside was old, its edges yellowed.
Two baby boys, maybe a year old, with identical faces.
