Abandoned XXL Wife: My Second Husband Is A Tycoon Chapter 12
Mrs. Kane looked me up and down, her eyes full of contempt.
“Well, well. I heard someone dumped my son and immediately found a way to hook up with the richest man in town.”
“What happened? Did the billionaire get tired of you and kick you out?”
She clicked her tongue.
“Sophie, you graduated from a top university. How did you end up working construction?”
“If you ask me, your nasty temper was all because my son spoiled you. You needed to suffer a little out here to realize how good you had it with us!”
One of the employees beside me asked,
“Boss, are we still going to lunch?”
I nodded and turned to leave.
Mrs. Kane’s voice got even more sarcastic.
“Oh, look at that! She’s a boss now!”
“At most, you’re a contractor. Don’t let a little success go to your head.”
“Mrs. Kane, I’ve already left your family. Watch what you say.”
I forced myself to stay calm.
“Sophie, so you still remember that you used to be married into the Kane family!”
“Have you ever thought about how pathetic you’re making my son look?”
“He’s a successful businessman. What would people think if they found out his ex-wife was working as some low-class construction worker?”
“Where would that leave my son’s reputation?”
I was about to fire back when a tall figure suddenly stepped up behind me.
Ethan gave a cold laugh.
“Your son cheated on his wife and slept around. And your family thinks Sophie should be ashamed?”
“She’s supporting herself with her own hard work. Somehow, that’s what embarrasses you?”
He looked at Mrs. Kane.
“I finally understand where Daniel got his shamelessness.”
“Must be a family trait.”
A few simple words left Mrs. Kane speechless.
She was so furious that her hands shook.
“You! Who the hell do you think you are?”
“Do you even know who my son is? How dare you offend me!”
She suddenly looked Ethan up and down.
“Wait. You’re not the new man Sophie hooked up with, are you?”
She folded her arms and sneered.
“Young man, you’re dressed pretty well, and you’ve got a decent presence. How did you end up falling for a woman like Sophie?”
Ethan clearly had no interest in arguing with her.
He turned to his secretary.
“Get this woman out of here. And put a sign at the mall entrance.”
“It should say: Daniel Kane and his mother are not allowed inside.”
“You…”
Mrs. Kane was shaking with rage.
But security had already grabbed her and started dragging her toward the exit.
I looked at Ethan gratefully.
“Thank you, Mr. Foster. Are you here for work?”
I had only recently learned that this entire mall belonged to the Foster family.
Ethan looked down at me.
“Charlie said you keep skipping meals because you’re too busy. So I had to bring you lunch myself.”
“Huh?”
“Come on. Let’s eat in your office.”
Ethan carefully unpacked the food and set everything on my desk before handing me a pair of chopsticks.
“Are you eating here too?” I asked.
Ethan looked offended.
“I went all the way home to get lunch. It took me over an hour round trip.”
“Sophie, you’re really heartless.”
“I… That’s not what I meant. I just thought you were busy…”
He pushed the chopsticks into my hand.
“No matter how busy I am, I still have to eat.”
I started eating while thinking about the construction work.
Then Ethan suddenly spoke.
“Sophie, that woman called you a seductress.”
He paused.
“But I haven’t noticed any of those skills.”
I nearly choked. “What?”
Rice got stuck in my throat, and I started coughing.
Ethan quickly patted my back.
It took a while before I finally caught my breath.
“I’m not some seductress. She was just talking nonsense.”
I wanted the floor to open up and swallow me.
“Sophie.”
Ethan suddenly called my name.
“Come here.”
I had no idea what he wanted, but I instinctively did as he said.
Ethan raised his hand.
His index finger gently touched the corner of my lips.
Then he leaned closer.
His warm breath brushed against my face.
My cheeks instantly burned.
“Mr. Foster…”
But instead of saying anything, Ethan simply reached over and wiped a crumb from the corner of my mouth.
I was so embarrassed I wanted to disappear.
But Ethan didn’t pull away.
He lifted his finger, slowly brought the crumb to his lips, and casually ate it.
“Mr. Foster…”
I stared at him.
“What?”
He looked genuinely confused.
“Is something wrong?”
I was pretty sure he was flirting with me.
I just had no proof.
I was a divorced woman covered in dust, wearing old work clothes.
Why would a man like him flirt with me?
“I’m done eating!”
I jumped to my feet.
“You take your time.”
Ethan watched me practically flee the room and laughed under his breath.
“Sophie, I’ll pick you up after work.”
He really did come for me that afternoon.
After what happened at lunch, I felt incredibly awkward when I saw him.
I still remembered the prenuptial agreement I had signed.
So once I got into the car, I curled myself into the corner of the seat, trying to make myself as small as possible.
Ethan sighed.
“Sophie, are you avoiding me?”
“No!”
I turned my face away awkwardly.
Ethan reached over and gently held my chin.
“Sophie, your instincts are right.”
“I am pursuing you.”
My eyes widened.
“But, Mr. Foster… why?”
Ethan laughed softly.
“I don’t know either.”
“But every time I think about our contract ending in a few months, I panic.”
“And when I think about you leaving me, I want to tie you to my side and never let you go.”
“I wanted to take things slowly.”
“But you keep avoiding me, so I have no choice but to tell you how I feel.”
He looked straight into my eyes.
“Sophie, are you brave enough to fall in love one more time?”
“I…”
I couldn’t look at him.
My mind was a complete mess.
I tried to think about everything that had happened lately.
And all I could think about was how good Ethan had been to me.
He stood up for me.
He respected me.
He even taught my ex-husband a lesson for me.
A man as powerful as him wasn’t afraid of anything.
So what was I afraid of?
With that thought, I secretly looked up at him.
“Mr. Foster… I want to try.”
Ethan’s face lit up.
He gently rubbed my chin.
“Then can I ask for a little reward?”
“I…”
I nervously closed my eyes.
But Ethan only leaned in and pressed a soft kiss to my forehead.
“Sophie, thank you for trusting me.”
The moment I got out of the car, I practically ran into the mansion.
Charlie immediately wrapped his arms around my leg.
“Mommy! I missed you so much!”
“Can you please stop Daddy from taking me to preschool?”
I looked at Ethan in confusion. He covered his mouth and cleared his throat.
“With this little third wheel around, I can’t exactly pursue you.”
Charlie planted his hands on his hips.
“You’re such a mean dad! Are you trying to steal my mommy?”
Ethan crouched down.
“Charlie, do you want Mommy to stay with us forever?”
Charlie nodded without hesitation.
“Yes! More than anything!”
“Then listen to what Daddy has to say…”
Charlie obediently followed Ethan into the study.
