After His Heart Transplant My Husband Forgot His Daughter Chapter 05

Grady slid down the wall, his body folding to the floor as he broke into ragged sobs.

“No… she’s so little…”

He lurched up and tried to push into the trauma room, but I blocked the door.

“You can’t go in.”

“Sabine, please. Just let me see her.”

“You chose to save another woman’s child. You don’t get to ask me for anything.”

Renata hurried forward. “Grady didn’t mean to, he just—”

“Shut up.”

I looked her dead in the eye.

“I’m a 911 dispatcher. I know exactly how to initiate a child protective services report. If you say one more word, I’ll call the police right now and report you for aiding in child endangerment.”

Renata’s face went white. She finally shut her mouth.

I pushed open the door to Elodie’s room and locked it from the inside, leaving Grady on the other side of the glass.

Elodie lay in the hospital bed, her right hand swaddled in thick bandages. Outside, Grady was slapping his palm against the window, calling her name over and over.

She looked at him for two seconds.

Then she turned her face away and closed her eyes.

Forty minutes later, the police arrived to take Grady’s statement. He had been sitting outside the room the whole time, but I never unlocked the door.

Renata and Finn were gone.

As soon as the hallway cleared, I went to the hospital social worker’s office and set the copy of the dock’s surveillance footage I’d requested on her desk.

“I’m filing for an emergency temporary sole custody order,” I said. “And I want to file a report of severe neglect against Grady Marsden.”

The social worker took the files at once.

I also signed the medical liability waivers and arranged for Elodie’s discharge.

From this moment on, Grady was no longer a husband who needed my forgiveness.

He was a man who would not be allowed near my daughter again.
