After Lefting Me On The Bridge He Lost His Mind Chapter 32
By the next Thanksgiving, I had moved into a new home in Austin.
It wasn’t big, but the living room had a wall of south-facing windows.
Every bill was in my name.
The dining table was covered with food my team had brought over.
Jenna was the last to arrive, carrying a cake.
She set the box down and deliberately turned the ingredient list toward me.
“Don’t worry. No matcha.”
I couldn’t help but smile.
“You don’t have to check every time.”
“Yes, I do.” She lit the candles. “Some things are worth remembering.”
A crack of thunder sounded outside.
Rain began to fall, tapping against the glass.
A year ago, at this exact moment, I had been standing alone on a bridge, believing I had been abandoned by the world.
Now, the room was warm.
Someone was arguing over how to carve the turkey, someone was popping a bottle of champagne, and someone else was urging me to make a wish.
My phone lit up.
A new email had arrived from an unknown address.
The sender’s name was Truett.
I didn’t open it.
With a light swipe of my finger, I sent it straight to the trash.
“Mavis, what are you spacing out for?”
Jenna handed me the first slice of cake.
“Nothing.”
I took the plate from her and turned off my phone.
The rain was still falling.
But I no longer had to wait for anyone to come home, and I no longer needed anyone to shield me from the wind and rain.
For seven years, I had placed my future in the custody of Truett’s promises.
Now, at last, I had taken it back.
The rain on the window reflected the warm lights filling the room.
I raised my glass and clinked it with everyone else’s.
The rest of my life was my own.Â
