After Six Years The Alpha Begs For My Return Chapter 09
“We can settle it now.” Reese smiled faintly. His tone was more courteous, but his presence was undiminished. “During Avery’s six years in France, her housing, medical care, and territorial status were all protected. The work was earned by her own merit, and her residency permit was sponsored by Tidewatch. If Elder Calloway believes she owes White Ash River anything, you can make a list. I’ll go through it with you, item by item.”
He didn’t frame my six years as some gift from him. He only stated, with absolute clarity, what Tidewatch had provided.
“And one more thing.” Reese’s gaze swept over the elders, family members, and guards. “Let’s make this clear. Avery has already been granted long-term residency under Tidewatch and qualifies to apply for a formal member seat. Her mate is her decision. No one else signs for her. If anyone tries to force her hand with the Ellery family or with medical resources again, they can speak to me first.”
Graham cleared his throat, unable to stay a moment longer. “If this was a misunderstanding, I’ll take my leave. Elder Calloway, Franklin—I’ll call on you another day.”
He turned and left, his pace brisk.
The moment Graham was gone, Ophelia lost her last line of defense.
Standing beside Gideon, she looked almost transparent, her voice so faint it was barely a whisper.
“Avery, I didn’t arrange this agreement on purpose. I thought you were lonely abroad, without a pack link or family, and I only wanted to help you find a place to belong.”
“Did I ask for your help?” I turned to her. “Ophelia, you’re my mother’s adopted daughter, not my guardian and not my elder. You don’t get to sign off on my life. Six years ago, you interfered once and destroyed my marriage alliance, my family standing, and my pack identity. Six years later, you want to do it again? Do you really think I’d give you that chance?”
