After Six Years The Alpha Begs For My Return Chapter 33

He held the kraft envelope out to me.

“Inside are her photo, her current address, two deposit box keys, and the guardianship nomination papers from my will. The attorney’s card is at the bottom.”

Corrigan looked me straight in the eye.

“Avery, I saved your life once, but I’m not using that to bargain with you. If you want to agree, agree. If not, say no. The donors will go through the independent evaluation either way. Your answer won’t change that.”

I took the envelope but didn’t open it. I just held it in my hand.

“When can the surgery be scheduled?”

“Whether you agree or not won’t hold things up.” He took the cigarette from his mouth, holding it between two fingers. “The donors are under the hospital’s management, and the independent physicians are handling the evaluations. They signed the consent forms of their own free will. I can’t interfere. The Northern specialists will consult next week. If the final risk assessment clears, the surgery is set for next Wednesday.”

“I’ll do it.”

He looked at me for three seconds, as if making sure I was serious.

“You’re not going to ask her name? Where she is? Who my enemies are?”

“Everything you’re prepared to tell me is in this envelope. Anything you’re not, there’s no point in me asking.” I stood and tucked the envelope into the inner pocket of my coat. “You saved my life. Even without the donors, I would take on her guardianship after confirming she’s safe and getting her consent.”

Corrigan was silent for a long time, so long that the sparrows returned to the roof.
