After Six Years The Alpha Begs For My Return Chapter 38
My family came twice.
The first time, Franklin came alone. He stood in the doorway for a long time, looking at my mother, but didn’t come inside. He also didn’t try to use the Calloway bloodline to demand anything of me.
The second time, my grandfather came in person. He sat in the room for twenty minutes and barely spoke. As he left, he paused at the door.
“Miriam’s surgery will be covered by the Calloway bloodline trust. That was always her due. It will no longer be tied to any pair-bond condition.”
I didn’t thank him, but I didn’t refuse, either.
Gideon never returned to the hospital.
The caregiver mentioned that he’d been investigating Ophelia’s child, taking White Ash River’s records officer and independent physicians to several kinship labs. He had also sealed the original blood samples held by the pup registry.
As for Ophelia, after my mother revealed the truth, she vanished.
She shut down her collective mind-link, and no calls or messages got through. White Ash River guards searched for two days before finding her in the small town where her birth mother had once lived.
I didn’t ask how that story ended.
Not because I no longer cared, but because I had finally learned to save my energy for things that deserved it.
My mother’s surgery was on Wednesday. I needed to be clearheaded, calm, and strong enough to make every decision that might come when I stood outside that operating room.
