After Six Years The Alpha Begs For My Return Chapter 41
I didn’t know how to respond, so I just took her hand and listened.
“The debt he owes isn’t to anyone else. It’s to himself. You think you’re the only one he saved? He saved many people when he was a guard. But the one person he would never save was himself.”
The setting sun painted half the hospital room orange-red. My mother leaned against her pillow, gently closed her eyes, and a faint smile touched her lips.
Reese was standing by the window at the far end of the corridor. When he saw me step out, he slipped his unlit cigarette back into its pack.
“I never rush you when you’re with her,” he said, looking at me, “but there’s something you need to see.”
He handed me a document, just a few pages, stamped across the top with the wolf-head crest of the Gray Harbor Independent Bloodline Testing Center.
I looked down and turned to the second page.
It was a kinship and wolf-blood lineage report.
The samples belonged to Gideon and a six-year-old boy named Milo. In the conclusion, a line of bold black text stood out:
*Based on the existing genetic material and wolf-blood lineage analysis, Gideon Locke is not the biological father of Milo.*
The report was dated two days ago.
“Gideon picked up the results yesterday morning,” Reese said. “Afterward, he sat in his car all morning. He shut down his mind-link and didn’t respond to his guards. They knocked on his window three times before he opened it.”
“In the afternoon, he went to the town where Ophelia’s birth mother used to live. Alone. No guards, no elders.”
I closed the report and handed it back to him.
“How did you get this?”
“Gideon authorized the records officer to give you a copy.” Reese slipped the document back into his suit jacket. “White Ash River will correct the inheritance record. Milo will no longer be recognized as a Locke heir, but his right to support and protection will be handled by the child guardianship committee. He won’t be cast out for the lies of adults.”
He paused. “And now that you know—what’s your answer?”
