At My Baby Shower He Celebrated Another Woman’s Child Chapter 22

Brooke stopped me outside the prosecutor’s office.

She wore no makeup, and she clutched a stack of crumpled papers.

“Nora, I’m willing to testify.”

“Not for me, you’re not.”

Her face went pale.

“I know you’ll never forgive me. But Sadie was the one who forced me to edit the footage, and the fake screenshot was all her. All I did was help her—”

“*Just*?”

I stopped walking.

“You *just* wrote the script she used to lie to the police.”

“You *just* told everyone I was jealous of a newborn baby.”

“You *just* stood there while I was eight months pregnant and watched them lead me away in handcuffs.”

Tears welled in Brooke’s eyes.

“I didn’t know it would kill Iris.”

“You knew it would hurt me.”

She couldn’t say another word.

The prosecutor opened the door.

“Brooke, we’re ready for you.”

She looked at me, clinging to one last shred of hope.

“If I tell them everything, can you at least tell them I really was your friend, once?”

I pulled my arm from her grasp.

“A real friend wouldn’t help send me to a holding cell.”

Brooke stood in the middle of the hallway, her body shaking with sobs.

I didn’t look back.

In the end, she still walked into that interview room.

Not because she had suddenly grown a conscience.
