When I discovered my husband was the father of my best friend’s seven-year-old son, I didn’t tear up the papers.
I smiled and accepted the honor of becoming the boy’s godmother.
Because at that moment, everyone in the room was watching me.
Just minutes before, my best friend, Evelyn, had been standing beside the birthday cake, telling the assembled guests I was the person she trusted most in the world.
She was the benefactor who had funded my education, the older sister who had ushered me from my working-class roots into Boston’s old-money elite.
In front of everyone, she announced that if anything ever happened to her, she wanted me to care for her son.
With red-rimmed eyes, I accepted the guardianship documents.
For one fleeting second, I believed I had finally, truly been accepted.
Until I turned to the birth certificate attached at the back.
Under “Father,” it listed my husband’s full name: Graham Whitmore.
The registration date was eight years before our wedding anniversary.
Even more cruelly, no one around me so much as flinched.
Graham’s family went on raising their glasses. Evelyn only watched me with that same soft smile.
Their composure was a blade, sharper than the name on that line.
This wasn’t a secret that had just been exposed.
It was an eight-year fraud, a conspiracy of silence they had all agreed to uphold.
And I was the last fool to know, pushed onto the stage for a public humiliation.
I didn’t cry. I didn’t demand answers.
I just closed the folder and held my smile.
Graham came over almost immediately, slipping an arm around my waist in that familiar, possessive way.
“Congratulations,” he murmured. “You’re going to be the best godmother.”
He was standing so close, yet he didn’t notice the tremor in my hand.
Inside my clutch was an ultrasound photo I hadn’t had the chance to give him.
Now, it was one of two knives.
The birth certificate in my hand told me he already had a child with my best friend.
The photo in my purse reminded me that I was carrying his child, too.
I pressed the photo deeper into my bag and said nothing.
If they could smile while lying to me for eight years, then I could smile and play along for one more minute.
