The night my husband tried to pressure me into aborting our baby so I could donate a kidney to my stepson, I didn’t cry. I didn’t even confront him.
I simply posted screenshots of his text exchange with his ex-wife in the family group chat.
In the messages, my stepson’s mother had written:
“I don’t want this to interfere with trying for a baby with my fiancé.”
My husband had replied:
“Don’t worry.”
“She’s easier to persuade than you are.”
They didn’t know the shared tablet in the living room synced their messages.
They also had no idea that the sacrifice they’d so easily chosen for me would drag their entire arrangement into the light for everyone to see.
Just hours earlier, during a fundraising livestream, my husband had announced that I had agreed to terminate my twelve-week pregnancy.
I was sitting in the audience, hearing for the first time that I had “agreed.”
But the camera was on me.
The room was filled with applause.
If I shook my head, I’d be branded the heartless stepmother who refused to save a sick child.
My husband thought he had cut off every escape route.
He was wrong.
He was so busy forcing me to give up my child that he forgot to cover the tracks of the one person who truly refused to sacrifice anything.
I looked at the screenshot and hit send.
That favorite saying of theirs deserved a new audience.
A real mother should be willing to give up everything for her child.
Right?
