From A Humiliating Bet To The Boss He Can’t Have Chapter 03
Grant’s phone lit up again.
The screenshot his assistant had sent showed my signed long-term employment contract in full. Work location: Chicago. Electronic signature timestamp: today.
Grant stared at it for a long time without saying a word.
Sloane leaned over, glanced at it, and laughed.
“She did that on purpose. Signing the contract and then flying out—it’s just to scare you.”
Grant looked up. “She accepted the long-term transfer.”
“Contracts can be broken,” Sloane said, certain. “She’s definitely staying in a hotel in Chicago right now, waiting for you to chase after her. The second you contact her, she wins.”
His friends all nodded.
“Don’t let her lead you around.”
“She won’t give up the Beacon Hill life.”
“Stay steady, Grant. Whoever reaches out first loses.”
Grant turned his phone facedown on the table.
“Then we wait.”
But over the next three hours, he didn’t take a single sip of his drink.
Every few minutes, he picked up his phone, checked his notifications, then opened our chat history again.
The last message was still the one I had sent him:
[We’re over. Please speak to Lily yourself.]
No missed calls. No new messages. Not even a text letting him know I had landed safely.
At one in the morning, my flight had already arrived in Chicago.
When Grant lit up his screen again, Sloane was checking return flights. She saw that the next one was still boarding and smiled like victory was already hers.
“What’s the rush? The next flight back to Boston leaves in forty minutes.”
She pushed the flight page toward Grant.
“She’s at the Chicago airport right now, waiting for you to call and tell her to come back.”
