He Accused Me Of Stealing But I Heard The Truth Chapter 18
I didn’t wait for Derek at the hospital.
Once the foundation froze the payments, I reapplied for Medicaid, CHIP, and hospital charity care.
Over the past few years, I had saved every pay stub, temporary housing document, and insurance paper. The hospital social worker was willing to expedite my case, and she also connected me to a legal aid organization.
I found a night shift at a twenty-four-hour diner across from the hospital.
From ten at night until six in the morning, I cleared plates, wiped tables, and restocked the back kitchen.
The smell of grease and disinfectant clung to my hair and was impossible to wash out completely. I didn’t want Maisie to know I was working all night. After every shift, I’d wash my face in the employee restroom, change into clean clothes, and catch the first bus back to the hospital.
The next morning, Derek’s car was parked outside the entrance.
Before I even got close, his eyes landed on the grease spots on my cuffs.
“What about the personal payment authorization I left for you at the finance office?”
“It’s still at the nurses’ station. I didn’t sign it.”
“You took a night shift in a diner?”
He grabbed my arm, forcing me to stop in the middle of the busy entrance.
“This is a hospital. Let go.”
