He Accused Me Of Stealing But I Heard The Truth Chapter 36

She stood in the doorway and said, “But if this continues to be public, it may not be good for Maisie. When she goes to school and makes friends, people will search for this story.”

“The people who hurt her should worry about being found in searches,” I said. “Not her.”

Margaret’s gaze drifted past me into the living room.

Maisie’s unfinished phonics cards lay on the table beside a half-sorted stack of Medicaid paperwork. The apartment was small, and a clean school uniform was drying by the window.

“The Weston family can give her a better life.”

“What you mean by ‘better’ is a house, a school, and a last name.”

I opened the door a little wider.

“What she needs is a home that can’t be taken away by a piece of paper.”

Margaret’s lips parted, then closed.

“At the time, I only wanted to confirm if she was Derek’s child.”

“So you brought two lawyers into her hospital room.”

She didn’t try to explain again.

Footsteps sounded in the hallway. Derek came up the stairs and stopped short when he saw Margaret.

“You shouldn’t be here.”

“The board is trying to clean up your mess.”
