He Asked For Space I Left With His Baby Chapter 04

He Asked For Space I Left With His Baby Chapter 04

I pulled my wrist from his grasp.

“Don’t you have your own responsibilities? Why are you suddenly so concerned with where I’m going?”

Roman fell silent.

For a second, a flash of recognition crossed his face.

Months earlier, he had said those exact words to me.

After a long pause, he finally spoke.

“I should have told you before I went to Sardinia. That was my mistake, and it won’t happen again.” He hesitated. “I have to handle something tomorrow. Vanessa had another incident with the women at the estate, and it’s gotten serious. The Family Council is questioning everyone involved. I’m going to help her deal with it.”

He met my eyes.

“Postpone your surgery until the day after tomorrow. I’ll be there.”

Even now, when he had to choose between us, I was still second place.

“It doesn’t matter. I don’t need you there.”

His brows furrowed, as if I’d missed something obvious. “I can have the best surgeons on standby. I can make sure everything goes perfectly. I’ll stay with you.”

Before I could answer, his phone started ringing. Roman answered immediately.

Vanessa’s terrified voice came through the speaker.

“Roman, I think someone’s trying to get into my room. I’m scared.”

His entire demeanor shifted. He snatched his keys from the table.

I stopped him. “Wait.”

He turned back, his patience clearly gone.

“Nora, are you seriously expecting me to ask your permission before I help someone? We don’t have time for this. She could be in danger.”

His jaw hardened. Then, as if trying to reassure me, he added, “I’ll make it to your surgery.”

“But right now, you need to understand my priorities.”

He had completely misunderstood.

I wasn’t asking him to stay. I was trying to tell him I didn’t need him at the hospital at all.

But he was already out the door.

The next morning, I discovered my surgery had been postponed anyway.

Roman had personally called the hospital director. No one dared to refuse a request from the DeLuca family.

The doctor gave me a knowing smile. “Don’t be too hard on your boyfriend. Mr. DeLuca explained everything. He said you were only insisting on doing this alone because you’re angry with him. He even rearranged his schedule to be here. A man doesn’t do that unless he really loves his girlfriend.”

My original plan had been to have the procedure today.

Tomorrow, I would fly to Dublin. The day after, I would start my new life.

Instead, one phone call from Roman had destroyed all of it.

I called him immediately. Someone answered on the second ring.

But it wasn’t Roman. It was Vanessa.

“He’s sleeping,” she whispered.

“He was up all night because he was worried about me. If you need something, you can tell me.” Then, as if the thought had just occurred to her, she added, “Oh, weren’t you supposed to have your surgery today? I’m so sorry. I’m afraid Roman won’t be able to make it.” She drew a soft, theatrical gasp. “Oh no, please don’t take this the wrong way.”

I hung up before she could finish.

Seconds later, her PicShare lit up with a new post.

*Nothing feels safer than knowing he’ll always come for me.*

The photo was of a luxurious hotel suite. Roman was in a chair next to Vanessa’s bed.

He was still wearing yesterday’s suit. His eyes were closed, but he wasn’t asleep.

The dark circles under his eyes made it clear he’d been watching over her all night.

I blocked both of them and scheduled my surgery in Dublin.

A minor procedure like this could be done anywhere.

The next morning, I boarded my flight.

One hand rested gently on my still-flat stomach.

No one came to stop me.

And Roman DeLuca never even knew he was watching his girlfriend and his unborn child disappear from his life forever.

Roman was notified that I had missed my procedure.

His assistant called at eleven that morning. “Mr. DeLuca, Ms. Nora didn’t show up for her appointment.”

Roman frowned, checking his watch. He had stayed in Vanessa’s suite until six, leaving only after she’d finally fallen asleep. He’d assumed I would just handle things.

“Did she reschedule?”

“Mr. DeLuca…” His assistant hesitated. “The doctor mentioned something else. He thought you already knew.”

“Knew what?”

“Ms. Nora is pregnant. About eight weeks.”

For a moment, Roman didn’t move.

Then a slow smile spread across his face.

“Pregnant?”

He repeated the word, a low murmur, as if he could barely believe it.

“That woman…” he said under his breath, a rare warmth in his eyes. “She actually kept something this important from me?”

But his smile vanished as the assistant continued.

“I tried calling to confirm, but she isn’t answering. Mr. DeLuca… can you get ahold of her?”
