He Asked For Space I Left With His Baby Chapter 15
Something in his expression shifted.
“We won’t be apart. I’ve resigned. I’ll get a job here. Just give me one chance. We can start over.”
I shook my head. “I’ve already started over.”
His brow furrowed. “What’s that supposed to mean?”
I paused. “I’ve met someone.”
He stared at me. “I don’t believe you. Not this fast.”
“I do.”
The voice came from behind me.
I turned and saw Ethan walking toward us, as casual as if he’d been there the whole time.
Without a word, he took the bouquet from Roman’s hands.
He glanced at the flowers, then met Roman’s gaze. “They’re lovely. You can go now.”
Roman didn’t move.
For a few long moments, he just stood there in the snow.
Finally, a faint, defeated smile touched his lips.
“So I really am too late.”
Neither of us answered. Ethan took my hand, our fingers lacing together as if it were the most natural thing in the world.
We walked away together, leaving Roman standing under the falling snow.
A snowflake landed on my eyelashes, the cold making me blink.
Suddenly, a memory broke through the surface.
Another snowy afternoon, years and years ago.
Ethan had looked at me with that same amused expression and asked, “You really don’t remember me, do you?”
I stopped walking.
Slowly, I turned to face him.
“Were you the boy from St. Stephen’s Green?”
His lips curved into a full smile. “There you are. I was beginning to think you’d never remember.”
I laughed. “When we were kids, my friends and I were playing pretend.”
“We needed someone to be the bride and someone to be the groom.”
“So I grabbed the first boy I saw and dragged him into our make-believe wedding.”
“I can’t believe that was you.”
Ethan smiled. “I’ve waited a very long time for you to remember.”
His expression softened. “There’s still one question you never answered.”
I glanced down at our joined hands, then looked back up at him.
Smiling, I said, “Isn’t this answer enough?”
