He Cheated With My Friend My Parents Helped Chapter 33

When Thomas contacted me through my lawyer, it had been six months since we’d last seen each other.

He didn’t ask for a meeting. He only asked if he could transfer the money from that cashier’s check into an account of my choosing.

“He said this is the inheritance they had always intended to leave you.”

I closed the project report on my desk.

“I don’t want it.”

My lawyer nodded. “Laura has also written you a letter, as has Thomas. You can choose to receive them, or we can return them unopened.”

I was silent for a moment.

“Scan and archive them. Unless they concern medical emergencies or elder care arrangements, don’t forward them to me.”

I had said I would cover their essential expenses. That wasn’t forgiveness. It was a boundary.

A few days later, my lawyer confirmed there was nothing urgent in either letter.

I didn’t ask to read them.

After Thomas and Laura finalized their divorce, they sold the house in Bellevue.

When I heard the news, I was standing in a grocery store, choosing a pumpkin pie.

Last Thanksgiving, I had been holding a pie just like this one, standing outside that glass door, watching four people form a family that excluded me.
