He Chose Another Heir Now He Wants Me Back Chapter 07

“Elena, I have a clean job for you. Audit my books.”

At the time, I was on the verge of not making rent. After confirming it was a legitimate shipping company, I agreed.

Later, I found out he didn’t lack accountants. He had plenty of people who could handle complex books. Someone like me, barely starting a new career, wouldn’t have been his first choice.

He gave me that job because he recognized the De Luca name. There were old ties between the Morettis and the De Lucas, and he remembered them better than I did.

Later still, I found a three-year discrepancy buried by the financial director across three sets of mutually supporting ledgers. It wasn’t something you could hand over to an outside authority. If word got out, several routes and a lot of people would go down.

I gave only the result to Dante and let him handle it internally.

When it was over, he leaned against the window, an unlit cigarette between his lips, and looked at me for a long time.

“If you ever need me, just ask.”

I hadn’t taken his words seriously.

That job got me my license, an offer from an independent firm, and eventually, a partnership. Dante had opened the first door, but I was the one who had walked the road.

I never expected that after my call last night, he would fly back from Europe the very next day.

“You’re getting engaged to my wife?”
