Dante’s gaze swept over everyone present.
“Let’s make this clear in front of witnesses. Elena is under Moretti family protection, but she is not my property. Her marriage is her own to decide. If anyone tries to force Bellini’s terms on her again, you talk to me first.”
Marco had no reason to stay.
“If this has all been a misunderstanding, then I’ll take my leave.”
He nodded to Salvatore and turned away. The men who had come with him quickly withdrew.
The moment Marco left, Ophelia lost her last line of defense.
Standing beside Luca, she spoke in a voice so soft it was almost inaudible.
“Elena, I didn’t mean to arrange your marriage. I just thought you’d been alone in Paris all this time, and I wanted to find someone who could protect you.”
“I don’t need you to find anyone for me.”
