Luca was silent for a moment before shifting his gaze to me.
“Elena, I thought about what you said last night. All night.”
I didn’t respond.
“I remember what happened when you were thirteen.” His Adam’s apple moved. “You said the person hurting you now is someone I’m protecting. That sentence has been playing in my head ever since. I can explain.”
“Explain what?” I asked. “Explain how you acknowledged the child in her womb while you were engaged to me? Or explain how you entered that child into the line of succession and spent six years as her husband?”
Luca’s face went white.
Ophelia suddenly stood up.
