After a few seconds, Ophelia finally asked, “Did you never love me at all?”
Luca lowered his eyes.
“I’m sorry.”
She laughed.
It was nothing like her usual fragile expression. The corners of her mouth stretched wide, but her eyes were empty.
“Six years,” she repeated. “I wore the Rossi signet ring, attended every formal dinner for you, and helped raise a child you thought was yours. And now all you can say is ‘I’m sorry’?”
She walked closer, catching his sleeve.
“After Elena left, you took care of Maria, handled trouble for the De Luca family, and tolerated me. Did you think I didn’t know what you were waiting for? You kept the ring she returned because you thought sooner or later, she’d come back.”
Her voice suddenly sharpened.
“But she doesn’t love you. If she did, she wouldn’t have signed the dissolution papers, snapped her SIM card in half, and gotten on that plane alone six years ago.”
