He Chose Her On Our Wedding Night So I Took Everything Chapter 14
Wyatt didn’t move.
His hand tightened on his car keys, then slowly loosened.
“Elodie Carrington.”
He rarely used my full name.
“Do you really think I come here every day just to deliver documents?”
I lowered my head, pretending to study the papers in front of me.
“What else would it be?”
“If there’s another reason, don’t say it yet.”
He was silent for a long time.
When I finally looked up, he was still watching me, his lips pressed into a thin line.
“You’re not over Eric yet?”
I set the papers down.
“What gave you that idea?”
“Then why…”
He trailed off.
So I finished for him.
“Why won’t I accept you?”
“Because I just got out of a relationship where I wasn’t respected, and I have no intention of jumping straight into another one.”
“And because I can’t be sure if you actually like me, or if you just see me as a problem that needs solving, someone who needs you to handle Eric.”
His expression shifted.
“I have never thought that.”
“Your family, your career, your connections—they’re all excellent.”
I looked straight at him.
“But those things don’t get to decide when I start dating, or how I live my life.”
He was quiet for a few seconds.
“If we were together, I would be serious about it. And there would never be anyone else.”
I gave a small, humorless smile.
“Eric used to make promises like that, too.”
Wyatt didn’t answer right away.
I walked back to the reception desk.
“Our professional collaboration can continue as planned. Everything else, I’m not considering right now.”
“You should go.”
He stood there a moment longer, then finally nodded.
When he reached the door, he stopped.
“Elodie, I know a few words aren’t going to make you believe me.”
“You don’t have to give me an answer now.”
The door closed, and the low hum of conversation returned to the showroom.
I stared at my computer screen for a long time without turning the page.
People said Wyatt Winslow never backed down in a negotiation. But just now, he hadn’t pressed me, hadn’t demanded a timeline.
For the time being, I pushed down the unfamiliar feeling stirring inside me.
Right now, work was what mattered.
As for Wyatt, I could take my time. I didn’t need to come to any conclusions just yet.
