He Chose Her Over Me So I Chose Myself Chapter 37
The day before the submission deadline, Camille came to see me.
She stood outside the studio and, unlike last time, didn’t push the door open herself.
“Can I come in?”
I set down my glass cutter.
“If you need something, you can say it from there.”
She held out a sheet of paper.
“The university is reevaluating the project partnership. If you sign this, saying you never questioned my research and never accused me of misusing donations—”
I read it.
The first two statements were true.
But there was another section further down, stating that the fundraising controversy had stemmed from a private misunderstanding between sisters and that we were now reconciled.
“I can have my lawyer issue a statement covering the first two points.”
I handed the page back to her.
“But I’m not signing that last part.”
Camille tightened her grip on the paper.
“Do you have to watch me lose everything before you’re satisfied?”
“Your award hasn’t been revoked, and your research hasn’t been accused of fraud. The only thing you’ve lost is the foundation fundraising you gained through me and through that wedding.”
“That was all arranged by our parents!”
“Then go talk to them.”
The grievance in her eyes shifted suddenly into confusion.
In the past, if anything ever went wrong between us, everyone expected me to solve it.
Now that I was putting the problem back in her hands, she didn’t even know where to begin.
“June, do you really not hate me at all?”
“I did hate you.”
I looked at her.
“But now I’m much too busy living my own life.”
After Camille left, I deleted the final paragraph from the statement and sent the rest to my lawyer.
I would not fabricate her guilt.
And I would never again lie for the sake of her dignity.
The next day, an email arrived from the library.
My proposal had been accepted.
