He Chose His Ex So I Chose My Empire Chapter 05
I walked out of the elevator quickly.
Behind me, I heard Liam’s low, urgent voice.
“Elara!”
I didn’t stop. I walked straight through the lobby, leaving him in my wake.
Once I was away from the crowd, I ducked into an empty stairwell.
The moment the door clicked shut, the tears fell.
All the humiliation and pain I’d swallowed all day came rushing out.
I remembered a family gathering in college.
A relative had announced in front of everyone that I overestimated myself, that I would never amount to anything.
Back then, it had been Liam who’d stepped in front of me and said to the room, “I believe in her.”
In that moment, I’d really believed he would always be on my side.
But everything I had fought so desperately to keep—my professional standing, that tiny scrap of security in my marriage—had all gone to Serena in the end.
I was always one step behind.
I made my way to the underground garage, got into my car, and cried until I was empty.
Finally, with no strength left, I wiped my face with a tissue.
Just as I lifted my head, I saw Liam in front of my car.
He was walking quickly, the anxiety on his face plain to see.
Before he could get any closer, I started the engine.
The tires screeched against the concrete.
I didn’t wait for him. I slammed my foot on the gas and sped away.
