He Deceived Me So I Destroyed His Family’s Legacy Chapter 06

Later, the Hale family went bankrupt.

Everyone we knew vanished.

But Adrian came to our door and said the engagement still stood, that he would marry me.

He said, “Nora, I won’t leave you alone.”

And I believed him.

I took Lily’s hand and walked through the doors of the Blackwood mansion with him.

I thought it was our salvation.

But now my sister lay in a side wing of that mansion, so wasted she was barely clinging to life.

And the baby in my womb had been turned into a tool to secure another woman’s future.

While he stood among a chorus of congratulations, still the good man in everyone’s eyes.

He was rotten to the core.

And all the while, he wore such a polished, respectable shell.

I hated myself for trusting him—and for bringing Lily into this house with me.

Lily was in pain all night. Only at dawn did she finally fall into a fitful sleep.

When the doctor came to change her IV, I stopped him, pressing the scissors I had hidden in my sleeve against his side.

“Come with me.”

He looked at me but didn’t call for help.

He only asked in a low voice, “Is Lily coming too?”

“She can’t stay here any longer.”

“If she does, she’ll die.”

My throat tightened.

“You’re not afraid?”

He gave a bitter smile.

“If I were, I wouldn’t have been secretly leaving her extra painkillers all this time.”

Downstairs, the band was deafening.

Everyone was crowded into the main house, watching Vanessa make her entrance.

When I lifted Lily onto my back, she weighed almost nothing.

She blinked awake, her eyes hazy.

“Nora.”

“Where are we going?”

My tears nearly fell.

“Home.”

She stared at me blankly.

“Do we still have a home?”

I gritted my teeth.

“Wherever I am, that’s your home.”

The words had barely left my mouth when the roar of an engine sounded behind us.

Someone shouted from the end of the street.

“Mrs. Blackwood is getting away!”
