I helped Lily back to her room and shut the windows.
“Don’t be afraid.”
“This time, they’re not here to drag us back.”
“I’ve been waiting for them.”
When the yard gate opened, Adrian was standing in the rain.
The moment he saw me, he let out a slow breath.
“Nora.”
“I’m not here to take you by force.”
I looked at him.
“Then why are you here?”
His tone was calm.
“Julian is dead.”
“Lily can stay here and recover for now.”
“But once the child is born, it must be returned to the Blackwood family.”
My fingers tightened, but I didn’t speak.
That was the line I had been waiting for.
Seeing my silence, Adrian seemed to think I was afraid, and his voice softened.
“Nora, stop this.”
“The child in Lily’s belly is Julian’s.”
“The one in yours is, too.”
“Julian may be dead, but Blackwood heirs can’t be left to wander.”
I laughed.
“A man like Julian deserves heirs?”

“Nora Hale.”

“What?”
