He Deceived Me So I Destroyed His Family’s Legacy Chapter 20
“Come inside first.”
But the woman didn’t move.
She kept looking back toward the main street as if a monster were chasing her.
“My husband’s family is coming.”
“They said even if the child dies, they won’t let me get away.”
“They said they paid to bring me to America, so if I die, I die in their house.”
My face hardened.
But Lily spoke before I could.
“Come in.”
“This isn’t their house.”
As the doctor worked to bring the child’s fever down, angry voices rose at the end of the street.
Several men stormed up to the clinic. The one in front had a vicious look on his face.
“Hand over my wife!”
“She stole my son and dares to hide in here?”
I was about to step forward, but Lily pressed a hand on my arm.
“Nora.”
“This time, let me.”
She walked to the door.
The wind lifted the sleeve of her blouse.
She was still thin, still frail, but her back was straight.
The man took one look at her and laughed coldly.
“And who are you supposed to be?”
“What right do you have to interfere in my family’s business?”
Lily met his eyes.
“She isn’t a thing.”
“She’s a person.”
“And the child isn’t your property.”
“That’s a life.”
The man’s expression darkened, and he reached out to shove her.
The clinic’s back door opened.
The woman who had given a statement here last year, the old woman from the produce stall, the young clerk from the pharmacy next door—they all stepped out together.
