He Deceived Me So I Destroyed His Family’s Legacy Chapter 36

After the Blackwood Group’s liquidation was complete, the remaining assets were awarded by the court to the victims and their families.

The Hales did not take a cent.

The old examination room in the Hale house was repainted. Lily insisted on keeping the two pencil lines in the entryway where our heights had been marked.

“So the children who come here later will know we were little once, too.”

She crouched by the wall, carefully brushing fresh paint around the lines.

I asked, “And then?”

“Then they grow up.”

“They leave the people who hurt them.”

“And they have homes of their own.”

The doctor brought the sign from the Cold Spring clinic and hung it outside the Hale house.

One board listed hours for free medical care.

Another listed resources for legal aid and temporary shelter.

The first person to come help was the woman who had stumbled into the clinic that rainy night, her child burning with fever.

Her little one could walk now, wobbling after a cat that was sunning itself on the porch.

As she organized registration forms for us, she asked me,

“What is this place called?”

I thought for a moment.

“Home.”

She blinked, then smiled and wrote the name in the logbook.

On opening day, there were no flowers, no high-society guests.

The old woman from the produce stall brought two baskets of apples.

The young clerk from the pharmacy next door brought several boxes of medicine.

The women who had once written their statements in our little clinic now filled the yard, children in their arms.

Someone asked Lily why she was willing to help strangers.

She was tying a little girl’s shoelace.

“Because I know how frightening it is when the door won’t open.”

At dusk, the crowd dispersed.
