He Erased Me From The Photo I Erased Him From My Life Chapter 12
Before heading to my desk, I stopped by the break room.
Naomi followed me in, her expression concerned. “Do you need to take the rest of the day off?”
“No.”
I poured hot water into a mug, dropped in a tea bag, and added a slice of lemon. Steam curled into the air. I stood there, warming my hands on the cup for a full minute before returning to my desk and opening my laptop.
My hands weren’t shaking. I didn’t feel sad.
Seeing Owen was like recalling a bad dream that was already over. It couldn’t even disrupt my workday.
Downstairs, Owen was still standing where I had left him.
He watched my back disappear beyond the security gates and didn’t move for a long time. He ended up staying in Denver that night.
Early the next morning, he returned to my office building but didn’t go inside. He just stood across the street, watching every person who approached the entrance.
He had once known exactly what time Sloane dropped Lucy off at school, which days she had doctor’s appointments, even the brand of coffee she preferred.
But now, he had no idea what time Natalie started work. He didn’t know if she took the light rail or drove. He didn’t even know what neighborhood she lived in.
He knew nothing.
Standing on that street corner, he finally understood that Natalie’s new life had no point of entry for him.
Half an hour later, he turned away and dragged his suitcase toward the airport.
That afternoon, the flight to Chicago took off. As Denver grew smaller and smaller below the airplane window, he still had no idea where he could even begin to look for her.
