He Gave Her My Home So I Took Back My Life Chapter 08
The moment Mateo appeared, every camera swung toward him.
“Mr. Ruiz, what brings you to Savannah?”
“Are you investing in the Ashford Foundation?”
Reporters surged around him, but he didn’t break stride.
From the moment he entered the lobby, his gaze shot past the crowd to my hands, cuffed behind my back. When he saw the tear tracks on my face, his expression turned to ice.
The noisy lobby fell silent.
Vivian’s eyes lit up. In a low voice, she asked, “Graham, did you invite Mr. Ruiz to mediate?”
Graham looked just as surprised but immediately straightened his cuffs and stepped forward, his hand outstretched.
“Mr. Ruiz, I wasn’t expecting you to come in person—”
Mateo walked right past him.
Graham’s hand hung in the air.
He glanced at me, a frown creasing his brow as he clearly remembered me saying I’d hired a lawyer. In his mind, I was probably still incapable of hiring someone like Mateo.
Mateo stopped in front of me. He took off his suit jacket and draped it gently over my shoulders, covering the rumpled collar of my dress.
“I’m sorry,” he said quietly. “I’m late.”
Then he turned and handed the officers his bar credentials, along with an emergency personal protection order stamped as received by the court.
“I am counsel for Nora Hale. From this moment forward, any questioning must take place with me present. An unverified, edited video is not sufficient grounds to continue parading my client through the press.”
The lead officer took the papers, his expression shifting. The grip on my arm eased.
Only then did Mateo look at Graham.
Graham was still standing where he’d been left, the calm on his face shattered beyond repair.
Mateo stepped in front of me, his voice cold and clear enough for the entire lobby to hear.
“I’d like to know what my client did to merit Mr. Ashford mobilizing the police—and inviting half of Savannah’s media to witness it.”
