Before he left town, Nico came to see me one last time.
He placed a hard drive on the table between us.
It contained the complete chat history of The Five Forever, along with a handwritten letter of apology.
His eyes were red-rimmed.
“I’ve cut off contact with them.”
“Marco and the others… they know they were wrong, too.”
“They all want to apologize to you.”
“There’s no need.”
I shook my head.
“Whether they liked me or not doesn’t matter anymore.”
“The only person who could have made me stay was you.”
“And in the end, the person who made me leave was also you.”
Nico lowered his head. After a long silence, he asked, “Is there really no chance for us?”
I looked out the window at the white-capped waves.
“No.”
“I have my own friends now.”
“They wait for me before they eat. When we take pictures, they pull me into the middle.”
“Real friends don’t make you fight for your spot.”
Tears welled in Nico’s eyes and fell, unchecked.
“Then what am I supposed to do?”
“You’ll meet someone who’s right for you.”
“But I only want you.”
I shook my head gently.
“No. You want the Virginia who would never leave.”
“She’s gone.”
