He Gave Our Baby To His Mistress Then I Was Reborn Chapter 03

Richard’s jaw tightens. “Don’t embarrass this family. Go get him. Now.”

I’ll give my in-laws credit. They’re decent people. Old-fashioned decent. God only knows how they raised a monster like Preston.

Genetic mutation, maybe.

Preston takes Sierra’s arm and they sweep out.

The party gets quiet. Awkward. The air feels heavy.

Then the butler, Walter, announces: “Mr. Ethan Sinclair.”

My oldest brother walks in with a big smile, greets my in-laws, then walks over and ruffles my hair.

“Little sister. You did good.”

He pulls a folder from his jacket and hands it to me.

“This is the amusement park I bought for the babies. Already in Lucky’s name.”

Another folder.

“This is your new house. The estate out on the coast.”

The guests gasp.

“Mr. Sinclair, that’s got to be hundreds of millions…”

Ethan shrugs. “She’s the only Sinclair girl. If I don’t spoil her, who will?”

Walter’s voice again: “Senator Damon Sinclair.”

Damon walks in, tall and easy and grinning. “Where’s my niece and nephew? Uncle Damon needs to see them!”

The nanny brings the babies over. My brothers hover, marveling at tiny fingers and tiny toes.

“Ethan, look. She’s got Yvonne’s mouth.”

“That little pout. She’s gonna be trouble.”

“Oh my god, he’s sucking his fingers. He’s *hungry.*”

They’re beaming. My whole family, wrapped around these babies.

Half an hour later, Preston and Sierra come back. She’s holding the baby. The pediatrician trails behind them, face grim.

Sierra drops to her knees in front of Richard.

“Please. Please save him. He’s… he’s not breathing right.”

The room freezes.

I step forward and pull back the blanket.

The baby’s face is blue. His tiny hands are purple.

The doctor speaks quietly. “Sir. There’s nothing we can do. High fever led to pneumonia, pneumonia led to lung failure. He’s gone.”

Sierra howls.

“My baby! I’m a terrible mother! I should’ve died instead!”

She scrambles up and runs toward the door, still clutching the body.

Preston grabs the baby from her, shoves the tiny bundle into Walter’s arms.

“Cremate him. Now. Scatter the ashes somewhere. I don’t want Sierra to see him again. It’ll break her.”

Then he turns and pulls her against his chest.

“It’s okay, baby. It’s okay. Some kids just come here for a short visit. Don’t torture yourself.”

She clings to him, sobbing.

“I’m so useless. It’s all my fault…”

Ethan and Damon go rigid. Ethan takes a step forward, fists clenched, ready to break Preston’s face.

I catch his arm. Shake my head. Not yet.

They stop. Barely.

Richard’s voice cracks like a whip. “Sierra. Why didn’t you take him to the hospital sooner? Why didn’t you ask for help?”

She chokes on her tears. “He was born weak. I couldn’t. I couldn’t…”

Preston puts a protective arm around her and actually has the nerve to scold his father.

“Dad, don’t blame her. He was a runt anyway. Better off dead than dragging her down.”
