He Humiliated Me Until He Learned Who My Father Was Chapter 06
My Name Is Avery Sinclair
“I’m Avery Sinclair.”
Vanessa rolls her eyes.
“We know your name.”
“Apparently, that’s all you know.”
I take the folder from my colleague.
One of Ethan’s coworkers whispers, “Why does she have lawyers here?”
I almost correct him.
They’re not my lawyers.
They’re my team.
Vanessa crosses her arms.
“What, did you hire people to scare me?”
The attorney beside me looks genuinely amused.
I hand Victoria a business card.
She reads it.
Her expression changes.
Avery Sinclair
Founding Partner
Sinclair & Blake LLP
Victoria looks up.
“Sinclair & Blake?”
Richard goes still.
Apparently, he recognizes the name too.
A senior executive near him does.
“Wait,” the man says. “The Sinclair & Blake?”
Vanessa laughs nervously.
“It’s a law firm. So what?”
Victoria ignores her.
“You handled the Harrington divorce.”
“One of my partners did.”
“And the Mercer fraud case.”
“My litigation team.”
The room grows quieter with every answer.
Ethan stares at me.
“You said you were a lawyer.”
“I am.”
“You never said you owned a firm.”
“You never asked.”
Vanessa shakes her head.
“This proves nothing. Anyone can print a business card.”
My colleague opens his laptop.
“Would you like to see the state bar records too?”
Her mouth closes.
Someone behind Ethan mutters, “Holy shit.”
Another coworker pulls out his phone.
“Sinclair & Blake is one of the biggest private firms in the city.”
The same people who laughed when I said what I earned are suddenly avoiding my eyes.
Vanessa isn’t finished.
“So what? Maybe the firm belongs to some rich boyfriend.”
I look at her.
“You really don’t know when to stop.”
“No, I just don’t believe you built any of this yourself.”
Victoria is still staring at my card.
Not at my title.
At my last name.
“Sinclair.”
Her voice is different now.
I notice immediately.
So does Richard.
Victoria studies my face.
“How old are you?”
Vanessa scoffs. “What does that have to do with anything?”
Victoria ignores her.
Then she looks at the name again.
Avery Sinclair.
Victoria takes one step toward me.
“Your father…”
The ballroom falls quiet again.
Ethan looks from her to me.
I say nothing.
Victoria’s eyes widen.
“Wait.”
“Sinclair…”
Then she asks the question I’ve spent three years making sure no one in Ethan’s life ever had a reason to ask.
“Who is your father?”
