He Humiliated Me Until He Learned Who My Father Was Chapter 08

The Face She Stole

My colleague places two photographs on the screen.

The first is Vanessa as she looks tonight.

The second is the woman from the so-called “before” photo.

I look at Ethan.

“You were right about one thing. The photo wasn’t edited.”

Vanessa backs away.

“No, that’s not me.”

Someone at the table looks from the old photo to Vanessa.

“Then why does it look exactly like you?”

My colleague opens another file.

“Surgical records, archived photographs, and identity verification say otherwise.”

Vanessa says nothing.

I look at the photograph she’d spent all night using to humiliate me.

She hadn’t exposed my old face.

She’d exposed her own.

Then came the Instagram records.

My trips.

My university.

My photographs.

Piece by piece, Vanessa had stolen my life and rebuilt it around herself.

By the time several women connected to her past arrive, Vanessa has stopped denying anything coherently.

“You lied to me,” Ethan says.

Vanessa grabs his arm.

“Ethan, please—”

He pulls away.

Then he looks at me.

“Avery.”

I already know what’s coming.

“I was wrong.”

“Yes.”

“She manipulated me.”

“You still hit me.”

“I know. But we can fix this.”

“No.”

“I love you.”

I laugh softly.

Tonight, he believed Vanessa over me again and again.

He hit me.

Put his hand around my throat.

Then watched while other people humiliated me.

Now that Vanessa has been exposed, suddenly he remembers he loves me.

“Avery, please.” His voice breaks. “Don’t throw away three years.”

Then he says the one thing I knew he eventually would.

“I saved your life.”

There it is.

For three years, that night has lived between us.

The reason I forgave too much.

The reason I kept telling myself he was a good man underneath everything else.

“You did,” I say.

He steps closer.

“And I’ve never forgotten it.”

Hope appears in his eyes.

I shake my head.

“You saved me once, Ethan.”

My voice is calm.

“And I’ve spent three years repaying you.”

I helped his family when they needed me.

Opened doors when his career stalled.

Forgave every boundary Vanessa crossed.

Stayed when I should have left.

I look at him one last time.

“I don’t owe you anymore.”

By the time the police arrive, my recording has captured most of the night. My team has preserved the relevant messages, photographs, footage, and documents.

Ethan tries to speak to me again.

An officer steps between us.

This time, I don’t protect him from the consequences of his own choices.

A few weeks later, I’m working late when Adrian Blake walks into my office carrying a small box.

“Still working?” he asks.

“Obviously.”

He sets the box on my desk.

“Then I’m guessing you forgot what day it is.”

I glance at the date on my laptop.

My birthday.

He’s right.

Inside the box is a vintage necklace I’d once stopped to admire months ago.

No grand confession.

No demand.

Just Adrian, as always, remembering something I forgot.

My father introduced us years ago.

I rejected the date.

Somehow, we built a law firm instead.

When I started dating Ethan, Adrian never crossed a line.

Now he leans against my desk.

“Dinner?”

I close my laptop.

For years, I’d mistaken gratitude for love and endurance for loyalty.

I’m done doing that.

I pick up my coat.

“Dinner.”

And for the first time in a long time, I leave without looking back.
