He Left Me Broken Now He Wants Me Back Chapter 04

The next afternoon, Rowan announced he was taking me to my follow-up appointment. I just said okay.

The car was even quieter this time.

He pulled up in front of Lakefront Medical Center.

“You went to the wrong hospital.”

“No, I didn’t.”

He got my crutch from the trunk and helped me out of the car.

“I want another set of images. I need to see the fixation myself.”

I didn’t argue. I followed him through registration, handed over my insurance card, and went to radiology.

After the scan, Rowan vanished. A nurse told me, “Dr. Ashbourne got a call and had to leave. He said he’d be back to pick you up.”

The sky outside had turned a bruised purple. Minutes later, rain began to hammer against the hospital’s glass doors.

I texted him.

The rain’s getting bad. Don’t rush. I’ll grab a car.

He didn’t reply.

I called one myself. By the time I got back to the apartment, I had to wipe the rainwater from my fingers to use the fingerprint scanner on the door.

The lock clicked open.

Mia was standing in the living room. She was wearing one of Rowan’s white button-down shirts, a towel draped over her wet hair, the steam from a recent shower clinging to her skin.

Rowan was handing her a blow-dryer.

They both turned at the sound of the door.

My grip tightened on my crutch. For a second, my brain refused to process what I was seeing.

Panic flashed across Rowan’s face. He took a step toward me.

I instinctively took a step back, swaying on my good leg.

He froze.

“Someone was chasing her car, and her address got leaked online. Her building was surrounded. She had nowhere else to go, so I brought her here.”

He pointed to a pile of wet clothes near the door.

“She was soaked. Nothing happened.”

Mia stepped out from behind the sofa, her bare legs exposed beneath the long shirt.

“Ro was just worried about me. Liv, please don’t misunderstand.”

My hand began to shake, a tremor I couldn’t control.

I turned to leave.

Rowan followed me into the hall, grabbing my arm.

“Liv, I swear, we didn’t—”

“Rowan, enough!”

I shoved him away, my voice trembling as much as my hand.

“We…”

The words caught in my throat. It took a long moment before I could force them out.

“We’re breaking up.”

His entire body went still.

“You’re not thinking clearly.”

My injured leg gave out. Rowan caught me and, without another word, carried me back into the apartment.

“Put me down.”

I beat a fist against his shoulder. He set me down on the sofa near the door, his words coming in a rush.

“I’ll get Mia out of here. Just stay. We’ll talk properly when I get back.”

I didn’t have the energy to hear another word from either of them. The moment the door shut behind them, the apartment fell blessedly silent.

I called Jenna.

“You said the guest room in your apartment was available. Is it still?”

She laughed.

“If you want it, it’s yours. I know a guy with a moving company who owes me a favor. You want to do this tonight?”

Half an hour later, I was sitting in the passenger seat of the moving truck.

The rain still hadn’t stopped. I watched our apartment building shrink in the side mirror until it disappeared completely.
