He Left Me Broken Now He Wants Me Back Chapter 41

The kitchen in the new apartment was small, but the living room had an entire wall of floor-to-ceiling windows facing the lake.

When I walked in, sunlight was falling in a perfect square on the bare hardwood floor.

“It’s close to the theater,” Rowan said. “And only a fifteen-minute drive to the hospital.”

“You already calculated all that?”

“Just the commute times. Everything else is up to you.”

“Why is it up to me?”

He froze.

“Right. Then we’ll decide together.”

In the end, we bought a couch that was far too soft. Rowan complained it was bad for the spine. I argued it was perfect for late-night script revisions.

After arguing for ten minutes, we bought it.

He placed an ergonomic chair with lumbar support right next to it.

I didn’t object.

By the time spring arrived, our new development project held its first public reading. Three playwrights who had never had a formal production sat in the back row, too nervous to look up.

I stood in the wings watching them, remembering the night I’d first handed my finished script to Jenna.

When the reading ended, the applause was long and loud.

Jenna bumped my shoulder with hers.

“What’s next?”

“Second-round workshops.”

“I mean for you.”

She glanced out at the seats.

Rowan was sitting in the third row, holding a ticket he’d bought himself.

“Mind your own business,” I said.

She just laughed and walked away.

Rowan waited until the theater had emptied before coming backstage.

“There’s something I want to ask you.”

“Ask.”

He didn’t speak right away.
