He Left Me For My Sister Now He Begs For Me Back Chapter 09

The first person to seek me out was Sebastian.

That day, I was taking inventory of all the gifts the Black family had given me over the years.

Though we had never completed a formal claiming, our families had exchanged many gifts over seven years.

A pair of antique crystal ornaments, several bolts of custom fabric, two boxes of jewelry, and all the small trinkets Sebastian had given me.

I laid them out one by one. Even the bracelet with the missing pearl went into the pile.

He had given it to me on my fourteenth birthday.

My sister had said it was pretty and wore it on her wrist the next day. By the time she returned it, one of the pearls was gone.

My assistant, Maya, looked hesitant.

“You’ve worn this for so long. Are you really giving it back, too?”

I lowered my head, checking the list.

“It was his. Of course I’m giving it back.”

Just as I said it, the door opened.

Sebastian stood in the doorway, his face pale.

“You’re returning all of it?”

I looked up.

“Yes.”

He walked in, his gaze sweeping over the items laid out before him.

His face grew paler with each one, his eyes finally landing on the pearl bracelet.

“That, too?”

I found the question odd.

“Why wouldn’t I?”

“I gave that to you when I was twelve. You wore it for four years.”

“So?”

My question seemed to stop him cold.

After a long moment, he said in a low voice, “Adeline, do you really have to draw such a hard line between us?”

I looked at him, feeling more baffled than ever.

He had chosen someone else. Wasn’t drawing a line the only appropriate response?

When I didn’t answer, his tone grew urgent.

“My marriage to Victoria doesn’t mean we have to become strangers. Our families are still friends. You’re her sister, and you grew up with me…”

He trailed off.

Even he seemed unsure of what role he intended for me now.

So I said it for him.

“Your wife’s sister?”

Sebastian’s face stiffened.

I smiled.

“Mr. Black.”

It was the first time I had ever called him that.

Clear embarrassment flashed in his eyes.

“Adeline, don’t. It sounds like we’re strangers.”

I lowered my head and closed the last box.

“We’ll get used to it.”
