He Left Our Daughter To Drown But I Saved The Footage Chapter 22

Her eyes slowly filled with tears.

“Then why does he get to do something wrong, take some classes, and then just ask me all over again?”

For a moment, I had no answer.

The adult world is always finding ways to give second chances to those who do wrong.

Few people ever stop to ask the hurt child how long she needs to feel safe again.

I held out my arms.

Maisie threw herself into them.

“This time,” I said, holding her tight, “no one gets to answer for you.”

On the day of the hearing, Evan sat at the opposing table.

He had a short haircut and was wearing a dark suit. Certificates of completion from his classes were arranged neatly in front of him.

The moment his lawyer began to speak, our side submitted the original evidence.

The Ring footage.

The fire department’s rescue timeline.

The record of his own admission that he had knowingly turned off his phone.

And the psychologist’s report recommending a full year without visitation.

After reviewing the documents, the judge did not approve immediate contact.

“The child’s psychologist will first conduct an independent evaluation.”

Evan shot to his feet.

“Your Honor, I just want her to know that I’ve always loved her.”

The judge looked at him, her expression unreadable.

“Mr. Landry, what you need to prove right now is not how you feel. It is whether contact with you is beneficial to the child.”

Evan’s jaw tightened.

In the end, he took a step back.

“Then at least let her see the letter I wrote.”

He meant the envelope he had left at the studio, which had remained unopened in my lawyer’s files.

The judge ruled that the psychologist could decide if and when to give the letter to Maisie.

Three days later, the psychologist placed the sealed envelope on the table.

Maisie stared at her name written on the front but didn’t reach for it.

“If I don’t read it now,” she asked, “will he keep waiting?”

“Yes.”

She slowly looked up.

“Then let him wait.”
