At the next therapy session, the psychologist brought out the letter again.
This time, Maisie agreed to hear the first sentence.
She didn’t open it herself. She asked the psychologist to read it aloud.
“Sweetheart, Daddy made a wrong choice that day, but Daddy has never stopped loving you.”
“That’s enough.”
Maisie held up a hand.
The room fell silent.
She lowered her head and stared at the toes of her shoes. After a long moment, she said,
“He’s still only talking about that one day.”
The psychologist folded the letter.
“You don’t have to hear any more.”
“Mom told me it wasn’t just that one afternoon.”
Maisie’s voice was soft, but her words were crystal clear.
“He missed my games. He left me in the hotel. He told me to stop following him around. And when the flood came, he told me to wait again.”
She looked up, her eyes dry.
“Why does him saying he loves me mean all those other things don’t count?”
Outside the door, I pressed a hand hard against my mouth.
That green soccer journal was still on the bookshelf at home.
