He Let Me Bleed So I Let Him Go Chapter 29

Elena sat on a bench in the stark white hallway of the private clinic.

She still had Luca’s blood-soaked jacket draped over her shoulders, and the blood on the backs of her hands had dried to a dark brown.

She was there not as his wife, but as his emergency contact.

The clinic recognized only authorizations registered within the Family system. Five years ago, Dante had designated her as the sole person with the authority to make medical decisions for him if he were incapacitated. The marriage was over, but that authorization had never been changed.

“Are you all right?” Luca asked, his voice low.

Elena shook her head.

“I’m fine.”

Luca studied her for a moment.

“I thought you might break.”

Elena’s gaze was fixed on the light above the operating room doors.

“Working on construction sites teaches you to identify what’s about to collapse before you deal with your own feelings.”

Three hours later, the doors finally swung open.

The surgeon pulled off his mask.

“The surgery was a success. The knife missed his vital organs. He lost a lot of blood, but he’s stable. He’ll need to be monitored closely.”

Elena nodded.

She hired a professional caregiver, gave detailed instructions for Dante’s post-operative care, and then had the committee notified to send a team from the De Luca family to take over.

When that was done, she stood up.

“Let’s go.”

Luca raised an eyebrow.

“You’re not waiting for him to wake up?”

“No.”

Elena slipped off the bloodstained jacket and dropped it into a medical waste bin at the end of the hall.

“I’ve done everything I needed to do.”

She thought it would end there.

But after Dante woke up, he refused to return to Chicago with his men.

Elena didn’t know how he found her apartment.

But the moment he was able to get out of bed, he was there, standing downstairs.
