He Locked Me Out Now He’s Begging Me Back Chapter 40
His lips moved, but no words came out.
After a long moment, he slid down the wall into a crouch and covered his face with both hands.
“I’ll sign,” he said into his palms. “All of it. I’ll sign all of it.”
The next day, my lawyer received his confirmation by email.
Daniel made one final request.
“Before the house is sold, come back one more time. There are still some of your things there.”
I agreed.
That weekend, the house was already empty. Our footsteps echoed through the living room.
Daniel walked ahead of me like a real estate agent trying to close a sale.
“The master bedroom’s been repainted. The wall in the study is fixed. The lock was reset to factory settings. The old furniture in the ADU is gone. The backyard’s been trimmed, and the inspection says the roof doesn’t need replacing yet.”
I didn’t comment. I just walked into the study.
On the top shelf of the closet was one last cardboard box. Inside were my diplomas, old letters from my father, and several family photo albums.
I packed away the diplomas and the letters. From the photo albums, I took only the pictures that belonged to me.
When I came back out, Daniel pulled a key from his pocket and held it out.
“Until the sale closes, you can come back anytime.”
That key had once been the thing I wanted most.
I didn’t take it.
“Give it to the listing agent.”
I carried the last box down the front steps without looking back.
