He Locked Me Out Now He’s Begging Me Back Chapter 62
Marisol said, “We’re celebrating six full months without anyone trying to banish her to the backyard.”
Everyone laughed.
I cut the first slice of cake and set it in front of myself.
No one reached for it first.
After dinner, an email from Daniel appeared on my phone.
It was the first time he had contacted me since the correction fiasco.
“After my mom moved in with me, I finally understood how much you used to carry. She and Tessa still aren’t speaking, and Noah barely sees me. Sometimes I think that if I had never changed the lock, maybe we’d still be living there.”
There was no request at the end.
Only one sentence:
“I finally understand.”
I looked at the screen for a moment.
Understanding that arrived this late was still too late.
It could not bring the house back. It could not restore those seven years of trust. It could not erase the nights I spent in the ADU from my memory.
And more importantly, I no longer needed him to understand.
I archived the email without replying.
Marisol stuck her head out of the kitchen.
“Why are you standing there? Your dad insists on washing dishes himself, and we can’t stop him.”
I shut the laptop and walked out.
In the kitchen, my father was arguing with my mother over where the dish soap should go.
“Ask Claire,” my mother said. “Don’t make decisions for her.”
My father turned to me.
I pointed under the sink.
“Left side.”
He nodded and put it there.
It was such a small thing.
And yet it made the whole place feel peaceful.
No one here had to disappear for someone else to feel they belonged.
And everyone who walked through that door knew to ask me first.
